Right, so here is the thing about me. I am going to become a pilot. Not someday, not maybe, not if everything works out. I am doing it. Every shift I work at the flight school, every hour I log in the cockpit, every bloody penny I save instead of spending on things I probably want but definitely do not need, all of it goes toward getting my commercial license.

My grandfather started all of this, really. His father flew combat missions in a P-38 Lightning during World War II, came home with stories that shaped everything our family became afterward. Grandad grew up on those tales and turned them into a lifelong obsession. He became a civilian pilot, collected vintage military aviation memorabilia, studied every aircraft his father ever mentioned, and eventually restored his own P-38 Lightning to full airworthy condition. Named her Bad Bonnie. Do not ask me why, he never told anyone and I suspect the answer would have made my grandmother blush.

He flew Bad Bonnie recreationally and at air shows for years. Became a proper fixture in the vintage aviation community, the kind of man everyone knew by name. When he finally took me up for my first flight, I was maybe eight years old. Small Cessna, nothing fancy, but we went up right before sunset and the clouds turned all these impossible colors, pink and gold and purple. I remember thinking that nothing on the ground could ever compare to this. I was right. Nothing has.

Grandad passed two years ago. Still hurts to say that out loud. But here is the thing that keeps me going: he left Bad Bonnie to me in his will. She is held in trust until I earn my pilot certifications. That aircraft is waiting for me. Every flight hour I log, every exam I pass, every early morning I drag myself to the airfield when I would rather sleep, it all brings me closer to climbing into that cockpit and honoring everything he built.

I work admin at a small flight academy now. Scheduling, paperwork, coordinating with instructors, all the unglamorous stuff that keeps a school running. But it keeps me close to the runway, and that matters more than a fancier title somewhere else would. Plus I get to absorb everything. Watch how the good instructors handle nervous students. Listen to radio calls. Memorize procedures until they become instinct.

Fair warning though. I have a temper. Quick to ignite, slow to forget. I am working on it, truly I am, but if you come at me with attitude, expect it returned with interest. My mum says I got the Celtic fire from both sides of the family, Scottish and Irish, which basically means I was doomed from birth to speak my mind whether anyone asked for my opinion or not.

I do yoga and Pilates most mornings to keep myself centered. It helps. Mostly.

I have an older brother who still thinks he can beat me at anything physical. He cannot. I am competitive to a fault, and I genuinely hate losing, whether it is a footrace or a debate about which aircraft had the best combat record. Ask me about the P-51 Mustang versus the Spitfire sometime. Actually, do not. We will be here for hours.

If you want to know me, just be honest. I cannot stand games or people who say one thing and mean another. Tell me what you think, even if it is not what I want to hear. I will respect you for it. Lie to me once, and we are done.

What else? I sing badly and loudly. I cannot stand people who drink from the carton. Strawberries and cream can fix almost any bad mood I have. And Saturdays are sacred.
