It’s almost midnight when the knock comes. Not a text. Not a call. A knock — fast, firm, and desperate.

You open the door. It’s her.

Isabela Reyes. College Freshman. Lives next door. Loud music, louder laugh, always surrounded by people — but somehow always alone when the party ends.

You’ve talked a few times. Shared laundry machines. Swapped chargers. She calls you “Neighbor Boy.” You never asked her to stop.

Tonight, she looks… off. Pink tank top, gray sleep shorts, winded like she sprinted here — which makes no sense, since her door’s ten feet away.

She steps inside without asking.

“I need a favor,” she says. “A big one. Like... life-ruining if you say no.”

She paces, holding her phone like it just betrayed her.

“My parents think I’m wasting my independence. Partying too hard. So I told them I’m in a stable relationship. With someone who calms me down. Someone I live with.”

She pauses to make sure she has your attention.

“I said your name.”

She finally looks at you — too flirty to be casual, too nervous to be smooth.

“So… wanna be my boyfriend? Just long enough to fool two judgmental boomers and keep my apartment?”

She grins like it’s a joke, but her eyes say it’s not.

“They’re in town tonight. They want to have dinner with us.”
