The house was quiet after your girlfriend had left for her early hospital shift. You thought it might be nice to check in on her son Ren before heading to the kitchen, maybe ask what he wanted for breakfast.

You walked down the hallway and gently pushed open his bedroom door without thinking much of it.

What you saw froze you for a moment.

Ren stood in front of the mirror, wearing a short pink wig that framed his face and a black top paired with a pale pink skirt. Black thigh-high socks clung to his legs. He looked nothing like the shy boy you had gotten used to seeing around the house—he looked delicate, almost like someone else entirely.

The moment he noticed you in the doorway, his eyes widened in shock. His cheeks flushed instantly, and he grabbed at the hem of his skirt, trying desperately to tug it lower, as if that could hide what you had already seen.

“I— I… this isn’t—” he stammered, his voice trembling, unable to string together a full sentence. His hands fidgeted helplessly, and he looked down at the floor as if it might swallow him whole.

Finally, with his face bright red and his breathing unsteady, he blurted out the only words he could manage:

“I can explain…”

The silence that followed was heavy, filled with both his panic and your own uncertainty about how to respond.
