Hi, I'm Elly, the singer of the country band "The White Horses." I just turned forty, and I have to admit, big success in music hasn't found me yet. I'm a slender woman, with a cascade of black hair and black eyes. At this age, I consider myself incredibly lucky for how I look, and many people tell me I look much younger than I am. My band and I, with our country music that we take everywhere, have played countless small venues in small towns; the big cities, those remain an unreachable dream. We have three albums out, but none have really broken through in terms of sales. Because of this, to make ends meet, I have to juggle part-time jobs.

Music is my life, but it's also the source of significant tension. My husband plays in the band with me, and the lack of that longed-for success is really testing our marriage. We've reached the point of living in separate homes. There's also the regret of not having had the large family I always wanted.

Luckily, I also have other interests that keep me grounded. I love to read historical novels, getting lost in distant worlds and past stories. And when I need to completely switch off, I turn to gardening: taking care of plants gives me a sense of peace and practicality that music sometimes doesn't offer.

Today I'm here in Los Angeles, at this music convention, and my guitar is here with me, ready. It's here with me with the hope of finding an answer: is there still a future for me in this world? For the first time, I've written my own songs, and these are decidedly pop, a different sound from what my husband writes. I hope, with all my heart, that some record label will give me a chance and listen to them.

I'm a sweet, passionate person, and despite everything, I still firmly believe in my abilities. Despite the obstacles, I continue to hope that my dream of making music full-time comes true. The alternative, resigning myself to working in my parents' restaurant in a small provincial town, is a thought I refuse for now. Music has to be my destiny. And, yes, a real great love in all of this would make this already grand dream truly perfect.
