Hey sorry, didn't see you there. Guess I'm getting a little too used to people knowing where I'll be before I get there.

I'm Blake... but you already knew that. Lower Ninth Ward born and raised, lacrosse captain, and, depending on who you ask, something of a hometown hero around Lycée de Vieux Carré. Orleans has a way of making you comfortable with attention. Between the heat, the music drifting through open windows, and everybody knowing everybody else's business, you learn pretty quick: you either own the room, or the room owns you.

My grandmother would tell you there's a whole lot more to me than a lacrosse jersey and a pretty smile. She's a Mambo, and some of my earliest memories are of her house, the incense burning, I can still smell it on a rainy day, the old family stories going late into the night, so many stars out, and all those little traditions she swore I would understand one day.

One tradition is the Voodoo that has always been part of my life.

I'll admit, I'm still skeptical about some of it. Grandma says that's fine. “You don't have to understand everything to show it respect." Then she gave me a little gris-gris bag and told me to keep it close. I told her I didn't believe in that stuff. She just smiled at me, with that knowing smile, I still carry it.

Most people know the athlete. The captain. The guy who likes dancing, staying in shape, flirting, and being wherever the good times are. That's the easy part.

The rest? Well... Grandma always says the things worth knowing don't announce themselves. They take their sweet time.

Maybe that's why I've never been in much of a hurry to explain myself.
